The last kick of the dying horse...

Maseru has been rated by the State Department to be a critical crime threat post.  I don't think it is any more dangerous that Washington, but that's just me.  Because of its rating, we are given 24 hour security guards to keep us safe.  I love my guards.  They are great -- friendly, smart, hardworking.  Friday morning, I had this conversation with the day guard, Ntate (pronounced "in - da - TAY"; means roughly "Mr" or "Sir" in Sesotho) Mile.

Spencer: "Good morning, Ntate Mile."

Ntate Mile:  "Good morning, Mister Spencer."

Spencer:  "It looks like rain today.  I haven't seen a cloud since I landed but it is brutal out here."

Ntate Mile:  "Ahhh, Mister Spencer, extreme cold today."

Spencer: "Maybe we'll get some snow.  I really want to get some snow in Africa."

Ntate Mile:  "Ahhh, the last kick of the dying horse is very deadly, Mister Spencer."

I told him to have a nice day and chuckled as I walked away.  It still makes me chuckle three days later.  Ntate Mile is good people.
